Digby reminds us that the fight over abortion isn’t about rape exceptions, it’s about the right to abortion. It’s about the whole GOP anti-abortion stance, not just Todd Akin.
•If a woman does bear a rapist’s child, that doesn’t prevent the father demanding custody.
•You may have heard about Pussy Riot, the Russian female punk group that got sentenced to seven years in prison for a protest concert in an Orthodox cathedral. Unsurprisingly, right-winger Rod Dreher, who thinks rape is the woman’s fault if she dresses too sexy, are “nasty pieces of work.” His article (you’ll have to click through) is about how they desecrated the Orthodox Church, but given its title is “Slag Solzhenitsyns,” I think it’s at least as much about his woman issues. Some more discussion of the Russian reaction here.
•The DC Women Kicking Ass blog discusses the announcement that Superman and Wonder Woman will start dating. The comments debate whether this is sexist (i.e., Diana couldn’t possibly be in a relationship where she’s the dominant, stronger one), let alone a good idea (despite claims this is the new status quo, she’s not going to replace Lois in pop culture), and whether it dishonors Diana (some of the mass media commentary, unaware Lois and Clark are no longer married, refer to Wonder Woman as a homewrecker). The post also captures some of my feeling that the reboot origin loses something from the classic version, but articulated much better.
Wonder Woman’s relationship status has been a headscratcher for writers for years, I think: She’s been involved with maybe one guy since her post-Crisis reboot in the 1980s (and that one didn’t work for me). As one blogger suggested (a long time ago, so I don’t have a link), it may be everyone tackling her is nervous about presenting such a prominent female hero as sexually active (it’s going to send some sort of message, and someone’s bound to think it’s the wrong one). The Justice League cartoons of some years back did do a good job setting her up in a relationship with Batman, but that’s the exception.
