Trump says he’s your protector, ladies — do you feel safer?

In a recent appearance, the felon and convicted sexual assailant addressed America’s women to say “I am your protector” and so you poor, helpless women will no longer have to feel abandoned, lonely and scared and “you will no longer be thinking about abortion.” Why? Because the states “and a vote of the people” will make abortion-rights decisions and that’s the way it should be.

I presume the point of this bullshit is that women thinking about abortion is bad for the felon’s campaign (hence the weirdo swinging back and forth on Florida’s abortion-rights ballot measure) and, as Jessica Valenti says, it probably reflects that letting the states ban abortion has killed women and Trump doesn’t like Harris pointing that out.

Immigration is an issue where he’s seen more favorably so he’s raising the spectre of non-white hordes swarming over the border to rape helpless American women (it fits with his current lies about Haitians). Typical for his deteriorating brain, it sounds very strange — unfortunately the media insists on “sanewashing” his ranting (well, some media — CNN’s crying bullshit).

As I’ve written before, it’s impossible to separate the religious right’s opposition to abortion from its general loathing for women having sex and for that matter for them having rights . As Alexandra Petri points out: “It was so tough in the before times, when you had to act as though you were a person. It was exhausting, like a dog standing on its hind legs all day. Of course, you weren’t a person, not really, and it is so much nicer to get to stop pretending. Much more restful this way. You are not thinking about abortion. Abortion is back in the hands of those who know best. The choice was the exhausting part; now, you get to be a blessed vessel and raise up as many children as they have decided is best. It is much nicer now.” (It’s satire. She’s on the right side)

There’s also the contempt for childless cat ladies — though of course, never for childless men. Similarly, Republican politician Bernie Moreno says women who can’t give birth shouldn’t care about abortion — but as he can’t give birth, why does he care?

And despite the forced-birth movement’s long history of wringing their hands and saying how they really, really, really don’t want to prosecute or punish women, punishments are increasing. Lose your pregnancy and the cops may come calling. Ditto here. Women can be prosecuted for not getting enough care or giving birth at home. Which fits with the movement’s enthusiasm for blaming the women.

Crisis pregnancy centers continue wreaking harm. And even though comprehensive sex ed can help reduce teen pregnancy and abortion rates, Florida’s demanding abstinence only sex ed. Because the supposed “American holocaust” of abortion isn’t as bad as women having sex without consequences.

The Felon isn’t protecting women. He and the Republican Party are a massive threat to women’s lives, health and rights. Never forget.
