•According to one right-wing columnist, liberals like me are angst-ridden over the new royal baby. We “love the idea of royalty because it validates their vision of an anointed elite with a divine right to the obedience of their subjects … However, this wonderful couple has created a traditional nuclear family that provides a powerful counterpoint to the kind of freak show dysfunction that liberalism requires to survive.” Oh, and we’re further confounded because Prince William is a guy who actually works for a living, even enlisting in the military when he didn’t have to.
Astonishingly enough, he’s actually serious. Actually not so astonishing, since this is mostly standard conservative affair:
•Liberals are a bunch of elitists who want to control Real Americans (though where he gets the idea we favor divine right of kings, I don’t know. Maybe he’s projecting right-wing fantasies?).
•Liberals hate and want to destroy nuclear families so everyone will be dependent on the government.
•Rich people who get help from the government, like farm subsidies aren’t welfare queens, they’ve earned that money … somehow. But no way do Will and Kate earn everything they get from the public the way say a regular working person earns their keep.
•The Supreme Court struck down sodomy laws in 2003. But one county sheriff in Louisiana still uses the state law to arrest gays. Something to consider now that a Virginia Republican wants to ban oral sex (but only to stop pedophiles, of course).
•A profile of a Canadian abortion doctor and Holocaust survivor who saw his abortion service as a way to fight the spirit of the Holocaust.
