Deeply moved

Move done. We’re in the new house.
The movers came Tuesday morning a little before 9 a.m. I dropped some stuff off at the new house a little after that, and it looked like this:

Six hours later, after we’d finished moving, our house looked more like this:

By dint of me not resuming work until today, TYG and I now have a working kitchen and I have a functional home office. The Internet was up Tuesday afternoon (TYG works in IT; what do you expect?) though this is my first chance to blog.
We’ve even started getting books on the shelves.
We like the house a lot. 1,800 square feet, lots of closet space, three bathrooms, much natural light. Not so well illuminated at night, but we can buy more lamps.
I’m really enjoying arranging my kitchen from scratch. More so because we purged a lot of TYG’s older and unneeded kitchen stuff in the move (my unwanted stuff got purged when I came up from Florida, of course) so I have more space. It feels more limited because I’m trying not to have every pot or pan buried under other pots or pans the way I used to.
Other than moving, not much going on (surprise!).
•I have a new And column out, on the importance of questioning authority.
•I started work at the end of last week (but forgot to mention it) on a story I’ve had in mind for years, concerning a hardboiled PI in a world that’s been turned into one gigantic movie. Most people just act out their parts; he knows it’s a mass illusions, but can’t quite break out of it. For some reason last week I finally saw how to start it off, so I sketched it out to the point that he goes up to a Bad Girl’s apartment and discovers … well, I don’t know what. Probably something that violates the genre conventions (there’s a lot of crossovers so to speak, but what?
•I had two shorts turned down: Grass Is Always Greener and Number of the Least. I’m definitely at the point where each new rejection feels like a punch in the gut. If this were a hardboiled PI film, I’m Alan Ladd getting pounded into the pavement by William Bendix in The Glass Key. Not a fun experience.
