Mother Jones discusses how corporate profits are booming while workers are asked to put in more hours for less pay. It’s part of what I was getting at here.
This collection of quotes about the Strauss-Kahn rape case (which was recently dismissed) includes several Undead Sexist Cliches, such as the assumption rape can be lumped in with adultery. And Ben Stein’s assertion it couldn’t have happened because economists don’t rape.
•Paul Krugman muses that being right on certain issues guarantees you’ll get less credit than if you were wrong.
Echidne points out that Italy and Germany, which have declining birth rates, are also very critical of mothers who work. Hmm, could there be a connection?
It’s something I’ve noticed about people who worry about birth rates here——Pat Buchanan for example, who believes white women should stay home and have babies so non-Europeans don’t take over. I’ve never heard any of these advocates call on businesses to provide day-care, flexible hours or other policies that would make it easier for women to have kids and work; the only solution they ever consider is women quitting the work force and going back to being barefoot and pregnant. The difficulties of raising kids while working aren’t a bug, they’re a feature.
