It was a good week.
I “finished” the latest draft of Brain From Outer Space—the quote marks are due to realizing a lot of the changes I’d made early in the book really didn’t pay off at the end, and they need to. So over the next month I’m going to work on replotting and see if I can’t fix the problems I’m aware of (new ones will probably emerge, but such is life).
•I looked over a flash fiction piece, Bro’s Before Ho’s, and pronounced it good—though not yet ready for publication. I may run it by my writing group before I send it out, but I’ll give it a couple more rewrites first.
•For the first time in a while, I sat down and worked on The Impossible Takes a Little Longer, which I’ve blogged about here. After debating between using a 1960s and a present-day setting (as detailed at the link), I hit on a compromise: The timeline diverged around WW II (Hitler conquered western Europe, King Arthur returned in time to save Britain, Kukulcan returned in the 1950s to stop our exploitation of Central America) but the story is set in the present. This is creating more weirdness as it goes along (Goldwater wins in ’64—which poses an obstacle for the Civil Rights movement I haven’t figured out how to overcome. Yet) but with that problem out of the way and a couple of minor ones (the villain’s motivation needed a heavy overhaul), I think I can get it updated before summer’s end.
And that would be wonderful. I have multiple novel projects floating around in different stages—let’s see, there’s Let No Man Put Asunder, Good Morning Starshine, the “elves in the South” story (which is now looking more like a novelette, but that could change), and one nameless one about sorcery back in Fort Walton Beach. Plus Brain. And I want to work on them all and there isn’t time enough. Getting even one of them taken care of would simplify things.
•I also put in a lot of work on No Good Deed Goes Unpunished. I’ve improved it a lot, but stuck on one key plot point. I think I’ve got it licked though; I hope to finish up this draft next week.
I was short one eHow from my quota, but I intend to make it up either tomorrow or Monday.
Plus the payment for Sword of Darcy came through PayPal last Sunday.
All in all, I’m pretty pleased.
