I’ve written before about the future Republicans want. More bigoted. Whites and men dominating the hierarchy. Freedom to punch down. But let’s not forget they’re mucking up the present too.
Writing about the August shooting at University of North Carolina, Paul Campos says “This is the kind of nation Republicans want to live in and you to die in“: one where you have to worry about being caught up in a killing field while you’re just going about your day. More here.
Republicans say they’re fighting voter fraud but some of them love it. For the right candidates, of course.
Fox host Jeanine Pirro is outraged that Trump has been charged. In 2016, she was outraged at Hilary Clinton running for president when Clinton was under investigation.
Right-wing pundit Stew Peters wants violence against democrats — though like most people who call for it, I’m sure he has no intention of putting his own finger on the trigger and will insist loudly anyone who acts on his words misinterpreted them.
As I’ve said before, many conservative Christians would sooner have girls getting pregnant out of wedlock than tolerate reliable sex education or birth control. And while religious conservatives are fine accusing a sex educator of being a groomer they’ll never remove the beam from their own eye.
They also want abortion banned. Or abortion clinics destroyed.
Whether Trump or DeSantis or whoever becomes the next Republican president, they want a federal government that does whatever the dictator says.
Marc Tyler Nobleman was going to give a talk at a Georgia school about the life of Batman co-creator Bill Finger (Nobleman has written about his story). It got canceled because part of his speech mentioned Finger’s son is gay.
Right-wing gay-hating attorney Mat Staver still wants to overturn Obergefell, the decision that allows gays to marry.
They talk a lot about liberals weaponizing the justice system against them. What they really mean is, their leaders should be above the law; some of them still hope to make it so.
Just like Trump, they’re fine with dictators overseas. I personally don’t want us imposing democracy on the world — it was obvious we couldn’t even before our failure in Iraq — but Vivek Ramaswamy, for instance, wants to let Putin have Ukraine and abandon Taiwan to China as soon as Taiwan’s no longer economically valuable to us.
They’d like us ignorant of history, thinking that the Founding Fathers gave women the vote and ended slavery. And generally they don’t care about facts. Some of them would rather not see posters of black heroes in school classrooms. In Florida, they think schools should present both sides of slavery rather than presenting it as a narrative where one race oppressed another.
Back in the Florida Panhandle school board candidate Alisabeth Janai Lancaster says doctors who perform trans surgeries “should be hanging from the nearest tree.” She’s not unique in this sentiment. There was a time I’d have believed this sort of thing was hyperbole but Republicans talk like that a lot and I think if they had the power …
Vote in every election like our lives depend on it. They do.
