Theory the first: They’re too expensive.
Dubious because: It’s the same as saying “Well I don’t want to pay that much, so I’m justified in stealing it.”
Theory the second: Most of the money goes to the publisher, so the author’s not really hurting.
Dubious because: Well, some of that money (overlooking the stories I’ve heard over the years about publisher accounting) goes to the author. And speaking as one, I want every possible penny I’m entitled to.
Also dubious because: I don’t believe for a minute actually weighs the royalty rate in when considering whether to pirate something or not. I also suspect a lot of people would never even think of checking whether the book is self-published with all the money flowing to the author.
