The incongruity of jock-strap-and-space-helmet does get your attention! I have to confess, I didn’t notice the main character was black–was too busy looking at other things–but even now that’s pretty rare on SF covers, I think.
I read that one — someone posted it to the FB group where I posted the cover image.
