SCOTUS Chief Justice John Roberts recently objected that “political people” should keep in mind that criticism of judges that rises to the “level of threats” can lead to violence, so they should shut their mouths!
As noted at the link, he’s fine with the Supreme Court doing nothing about the whiny little Felon’s ICE goons rounding people up without warrants or identifying themselves, including assaults on American citizens (who unsurprisingly had dark skin). It’ll be worse if the Big Ugly Bill passes because it gives ICE a bigger budget than the US prison system. And by helping President Cry-Baby end birthright citizenship.
John Roberts really wants to be seen as an above-the-fray, nonpartisan wise solon. But he’s been a solid Republican vote most of the time (or a silent Republican ally, as when SCOTUS simply refuses to take an inconvenient case or resolves it without explanation on the “shadow docket.”). He led the court in gutting the Voting Rights Act, allowing masses of money to flood politics with Citizens United, killed Roe, and declared the Felon can’t be sued if he’s exercising his official duties, no matter what the evidence. And no, they have not handed Democrats a weapon — the definition of official duties will get extremely narrow if there’s a Dem president in 2028.
Despite right-wing screams, violence from the left has not been much of a thing in recent years, whereas we just had a MAGA voter murder a Minnesota Democrat and her family, with plans to mention more. Lots of people are afraid of violence. From what I’ve read, a lot of Jews are more worried about their safety than they’ve ever been. Muslims have grounds to be terrified. Right-wingers are gutting gun laws and SCOTUS is helping with that.
Roberts is fine with unleashing leopards to eat people’s face. As long as he’s safe from the world he’s made worse.
