As I saw the 2002 remake of THE TIME MACHINE when writing up my Time Travel on Screen proposal, I just did the commentary track this time. Unfortunately, this just makes it look worse than on first viewing—the Morlocks and Eloi could as well be exotic jungle tribes warring with each other. There wasn’t much of interest in the commentary either, other than director Simon Wells explaining he didn’t have Guy Pearce make more attempts to save Doomed Love Sienna Guillory (fear the audiences would start taking it as a Groundhog Day comedy). Stick with the original.
I’d debated whether RUN LOLA RUN (1998) qualified as a parallel world story like Sliding Doors, but I’m inclined to think not. Rewatching, the concept of Lola (Franke Polenta) struggling and failing to save her loser boyfriend over and over seems more like a metafictional game than Sliding Doors or Uncertainty did. This is a debatable call and I may change my mind down the road, possibly depending on how much space I have to spare. In its own right, this is still tremendously entertaining. “Isn’t it always the same question and the same answer?”
ONE-WAY TICKET (2011) is a Russian film that would double-bill well with Boris Karloff’s The Devil Commands, as it involves Tesla’s Mad Scientist grandson helping a woman contact her dead daughter in the afterlife (with Philadelphia Experiment technology no less), which will supposedly enable her to go back in time and avert her daughter’s death. As it turns out, though, there’s never any actual time travel, just familiar Mad Scientist plot twists (double-crossing lab assistant, someone blackmailing the scientist with knowledge of his secret). With that reservation, entertaining horror though not A-list. “Einstein made one mistake—he denied ether.”
