Something I should have mentioned (#SFWApro)

When I reviewed The Year’s Best Fantasy Stories from the early 1970s last week, I’d meant to comment on Lin Carter’s introduction, but forgot. So now I’m making up for it.
What lept out at me was that apparently the 1973-1974 period when Carter was working on the book was a rather down one for fantasy. The Ballantine Books adult fantasy line had folded, another publisher who handled fantasies had gone belly up so a new company named DAW was the only book publisher releasing anything the genre. The magazine market wasn’t much better.
Compare that to today and it’s easy to see we’re much better off. It’s occasionally dismaying that I couldn’t read everything good in the field even if I tried, but as both a reader and a writer I think that’s a good thing.
