Given how much I focus on an orderly schedule, I’m always pleased to see I can adapt when things go meshuggah. Like this week.
I knew it would be a little disordered. I had a dentist appointment Wednesday, and Tuesday I’d volunteered to work on Raleigh Public Record’s election-night coverage. But then …
Monday night, our car developed an odd wobble in the wheel. Trying to figure it out (we couldn’t), kept us up a lot later than I’d expected. This made it very easy to goof off some on Tuesday, as I was going to be working late. But although we got the car fixed eventually, I wasn’t able to make it to Raleigh. So instead I worked on into the evening on my regular stuff, much as I hate to work evenings normally.
Then Wednesday TYG had an evening engagement that took her all evening. I again stayed up late working so that I could stay up late with TYG, get up late Thursday and not lose any work time. Only I work up regular time as it turned out, so I was kind of zonked.
So despite the disorder, I didn’t lose any writing time … I think. I discovered that when it gets this disordered (lots of sleep breaks in between work), it’s rather hard to track how much I’m actually getting done and whether I’m meeting my quota.
All that said, the work went well. I made my Demand Media quota, submitted Fiddler’s Black to a new market, and most remarkably I finished this draft of Brain From Outer Space. I think it’s the first time since I moved here in 2010 that I’ve actually liked it.
It needs lots of work, but the plot holds together 80-90 percent. I do want to add more material (Dani’s story arc is still week) and I need to add lots of wordage—right now, it’s a little over 63,000 words. I can easily add another 9,000 words, but I’ll need more beyond that.
Still this is really cool—I was getting close to writing it off, but now I can reasonably look forward to making it work. I’ll start reviewing and replotting next month. For the rest of this month, short stories and Southern Discomfort.
