Strength leaks from my body, yet I stand unbowed

Which is to say, another night of bad sleep last night (and not the first this week) but I still had a productive week:
•I finished my new And column, though it’s not up yet (you can check out past columns here).
•I redrafted Fox and the Hedgehog once again. I’m still not completely satisfied with some elements, but I do think it’s more a matter of polishing than Shit, It’s Not Working which was my feeling last month.
•I did a second draft of Oh, The Places You’ll Go and straightened out a lot of things I didn’t like first go-round (such as the McGuffin my hero is carrying). However this draft is very weak on plot—it’s just sort of a collection of scenes with no narrative spine. I don’t think it’s going to be an intensely conflict-driven story, more likely something lower-key, but definitely not as low-key as it is now.
•I worked a little more on what I’ve vaguely titled The Theater Story. Still only the first draft, though.
•I did a second and then a third draft of The Schloss and the Switchblade, trying to figure out what would make it work better (I’m not sure yet). Obviously something about the story has hooked me, but I can’t define what it is yet, or how to make it attractive to an audience that isn’t me.
•I put in another three hours of work on my next movie-book proposal for McFarland.
•As noted earlier today, I got two stories returned (though one with positive Send Us More Stuff comments). And then I checked on another story and found it disappeared in the Internet, so I’ve been waiting several months for nothing.
And I managed to get it done in the day, leaving my evenings free, as per my current schedule. It wasn’t as relaxing as last week (somewhat more cooking to do) but I think the new system is working.

  1. I call it “busy brain.” Thoughts take over and run wild, just when you THINK you’ve relaxed enough to go to sleep.

    Sweet dreams…

    Sometimes that’s exactly it.
