That was a longer absence from this blog than I expected. TYG and I spent the past weekend in South Carolina at a Mensa event, which I didn’t mention in advance because now that we own a house I can’t quite shake the fear that if I announce my absence in advance (even on this venue, which isn’t exactly FB in high-profile terms) Evil People will break in and take all our stuff, then burn the house down (undoubtedly while laughing maniacally).
I’d figured on posting while traveling, but as it turned out, I didn’t have much time. Usually I spend more time recharging in my room between socializing, but there was none of that this time—possibly my patterns have shifted due to being by myself most of the day. Plus TYG was out at events too, so there was less reason to go back to the room; usually one of us crawled in when the other was asleep.
Highlights:

•Meeting a screech owl from the Greenville SC zoo.
•Hearing a friend talk about his battle with cancer and the random chance that caught the tumor before it got too big (as I’ve mentioned in the past, luck fascinates me).
•Participating in multiple trivia events, including the Blonde Bowl quiz bowl where it’s impossible not to guess the answer if you let the MC finish (“Troilus” was the answer to a question that ends with ” …. and Shakespeare portrays him as the lover of Cressida in the play Troilus and Cressida.”). My team won; I’m quite proud that (according to the MC, Charlie) I answered more questions in the final round than any of the teams did in the elimination rounds.
•Spending Sunday with friends in Greenville.
•Visting TYG’s Mum, who lives nearby.
Despite a fairly easy drive home, I was wiped enough by the time we got back (happily, our house was undamaged and the plants out back hadn’t withered for lack of attention) that I didn’t feel up to posting. So think of this as my catch-up post as I return to a more-or-less regular schedule.

That owl is adorable.
It was really cool to see it react when someone played owl calls. It turns but very slowly and smoothly, like it’s too wise to panic.
And yes, totally adorable. The hooked beak not so much, but I didn’t get a good shot of it open.
