Someone I’ve worked with on a couple of projects has requested I post a character description from something he’s working on so that he can direct people to it. So I’m doing it. The story has a mix of Oz elements and detective/mystery themes, as you may gather from what follows:
Pon
Pon is Jinjur’s 19-year-old son. Having a mother whose mercenary work kept her constantly traveling, he grew up in Jinjur’s New York apartment largely without her, though she was very conscientious about staying in touch by communicator. She also devoted a good chunk of her paycheck toward paying for the nanny, housekeeper and tutor who took care of Pon, then later paying to send him to private school. Thanks to Jinjur’s calls, Pon never missed her too much and loves and admires her (she’s carefully concealed the grimmer side of merc work from him) a good deal.
The big turning point for Pon was when he took a school trip to a farm area. Living in a world of concrete, he found the presence of so much soil, land and plant life absolutely mind-blowing. As soon as he returned home, he took up container gardening and set out a window box for flowers. His mother began to hope this would ripen into a prestigious, intellectual career like plant-genetics research, but Pon loved the dirt under his fingers, the actual feel of seeds, plants and leaves. He wanted to garden. His mother reluctantly supports him in his goal.
When Jinjur informed Pon she’d quit her job and wanted him to move to Venus with her, Pon wasn’t thrilled, as Venus didn’t look like a good place to build a career as a professional gardener. Nevertheless, he decided moving to another planet was worth it if he could spend time with his mother in the flesh.
To his surprise, he grew to love Venus. The other colonists brought lots of seeds and shoots and there’s much more space for him to garden than back in New York.
Then there’s Trot. Almost from the day they met, they were attracted to each other and by the time the story starts they’re talking marriage. Pon also thinks Bill and his space stories are pretty cool, and he doesn’t understand why Bill has recently become so hostile to the idea of Bill and Trot tying the knot.
Pon is a tall young man with unruly dark hair and deep-set, poetic dark eyes. He’s invariably a mess: He spends as much of every day as possible digging in the dirt or caring for his garden and it shows. Pon has dirt on his jeans, on his hands, under his fingernails.
Despite his grubbiness, Pon has inherited much of his mother’s military manner: He’s very organized and keeps everything neat as a pin around the house.
Pon’s rarely alone: Trot spends as much of every day sitting out with him in the garden when she’s not taking care of things at her and Bill’s house. Occasionally, Jinjur comes out and joins them. Pon is very happy that his mother approves of their relationship, especially since Bill doesn’t.
Pon and Trot have agreed that even though Trot hates going against Bill’s wishes, they want to get married despite his opposition. Trot, has, however, put off setting a date in hopes Bill will come around to liking Pon again. Jinjur, on the other hand, is pushing them to marry as soon as possible, which Pon feels is rather overbearing of her, though he appreciates her concern for his happiness. He doesn’t know the reason Jinjur wants them to tie the knot immediately is because it will make it easier for her to drop by and visit Trot and hopefully discover where Bill’s hidden his evidence about the vault.
Pon comes across as what he is, a young man who enjoys what he does and looks forward to the day when he wakes in the morning. When confronted with trouble, he tries to think clearly and calmly, the way he imagines his mother would.
