Yep. Another linkpost.
•For those who think government can just spot the terrorists without requiring proof, look at how LA County jails routinely lock up the wrong people. Not to mention some American citizens get deported.
•Slacktivist discusses the fantasy that freedom is about to be extinguished and we must rise up and take arms! Because it’s so much cooler than our real lives. Another blogger critiques fantasies that we’re being martyred and persecuted.
•In Illinois the Catholic Church insists it should be able to get state money for adoption services without abiding by state rules (specifically no discrimination against gay couples).
•Practically speaking, we’re already waging war against Iran. Nevertheless, Romney and Santorum insist we should be more warlike. Some of their comments remind me of a portrayal of escalating involvement I read a while back: First the warhawks demand the president (whoever he may be) condemn them verbally, then come the demands that we take stronger measures, not “mere words.” Another view of Obama’s foreign policy here.
•Echidne points out that while Rick Santorum insists women can quit their jobs and stay home with kids (if they “just took an honest look at their budget”), he wasn’t able to do it on his $162,000 salary and needed support from his folks. Digby discusses Santorum’s conviction that government can, and should ban birth control——my god, it means people will have sex for “simply pleasure!” And that’s clearly something government should legislate out of existence.
•An argument that leaders have the power to reframe the debate about what’s realistic and achievable. Not something Obama’s big on, unfortunately.
•A list of predictions of doom about the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell repeal that turned out to be bullshit.
•An anti-abortion bombing in my former homegrounds. As noted here and here, the perp isn’t charged with terrorism.
•Paul Krugman reminds us that environmental regulations save lives. Slacktivist makes the same point. Much as I disagree with Obama on so many points, this is yet another way he’s preferable to the alternatives.
•Here’s an odd one: New Hampshire legislators want all legislation to find a justification in the Magna Carta.
•And another: A college teacher who was denied tenure because he asked students questions, even when they didn’t raise their hands (they wanted him to lecture more, ask less).
•John Yoo, the man who argued the president can legally order a child’s testicles crushed to make the parent talk, is, however, shocked at the blatant Constitutional violation of Obama’s recess appointments. But I’m sure there’s absolutely no political bias involved.
•Reporters grumble that Iowans have more than one political opinion. Slacktivist ponders how the media define “Gaffes”
•A pagan challenges her school district’s policy of giving away Bibles but no other religious books.
•Conservative bloggers face the music.
