Is that I intend to either take the day off or devote a chunk of it to some extra fiction writing (no, that’s not all I’m planning to do). And spend at least a little of it just thinking. Things are going well, but I might be able to improve some, and I don’t really have much time to sit down and do any planning activities except wedding planning.
•Are their ways I can make my writing schedule more efficient? As I’ve grumbled in the past, it’s not always easy to get up and get going in the morning—if I wake up by 5:30 a.m. (which I usually do) and actually get up (not always), that gives me about an hour. I used to take 90 minutes. It makes a surprising difference getting everything sorted out.
But somehow, rising earlier if I’m sleeping well doesn’t happen. So do I reduce my lunch hour? Or work later in the evenings? That may be the best option, but it is nice not having to do anything after TYG gets home.
•What projects should I concentrate on? At the moment, fiction writing is 75 percent short stories, 25 percent Brain From Outer Space. Should I try putting more time into the novel? Or devote more time to one of the other novels—rewrites or originals—that I have on the back burner?
Theoretically the novels are a bigger profit generator than shorts (unless I start selling to Playboy or similar big-ticket markets), but in practice, I’ve sold lots of shorts and no novels, so … And short stories do enable me to get stuff finished and feel I’m completing projects—I’d be miserable if I’d been working this long on Brain alone without getting it done.
So at some point on Friday, I intend to pour myself a strong cup of tea, sit down with my laptop and think. And hopefully come up with answers.
