South Dakota legislature promotes religious terrorism

As some of you may have heard, a new bill in the South Dakota legislature would broaden the state definition of justifiable homicide to include killing an abortionist to stop an abortion. Details here, and here.
The gist: The bill would authorize killing someone to prevent the murder of a fetus. The bill’s backers say this is obviously only intended to apply to people committing crimes—spousal abuse, murderous assault. The bill, however states that “Homicide is justifiable if committed by any person in the lawful defense of such person, or of his or her husband, wife, parent, child, master, mistress, or servant, or the unborn child of any such enumerated person, if there is reasonable ground to apprehend a design to commit a felony, or to do some great personal injury, and imminent danger of such design being accomplished.”
I think plenty of people would consider abortion covered under “great personal injury.”

It’s important to remember all this. In the first place, it’s amusing to see conservatives splutter and protest that hey, the left wing has just as many terrorists—particularly when I point out that at the moment, they don’t (1960s or 1970s, maybe).
In the second place, much of our counter-terrorism policy has been shaped by the fact we’re supposedly dealing solely with Muslim terrorists—that is, people who are Not Like Us. Therefore, we can ignore Gitmo, torture and the shredding of the Constitution because hey, it’s all happening to someone else. If we were more conscious of the homegrown, non-Muslim threat, maybe we’d be a little more cautious, and also a little less bigoted; it’s not like deporting all American Muslims or locking them up would put an end to terrorism.
Heck, apparently some states are even pro-terrorist. As long as they’re white and Christian.
