Christmas with the superheroes

There are several comic-book stories I reread this time of year but as with my Christmas movie and TV watching, i never got around to them. I did, however, enjoy the wild crossover BATMAN-SANTA CLAUS: Silent Knight (a 2024 miniseries with a sequel this year) by Jeff Parker and Michele Bandini (Daniel Mora provides the cover below).

When Scandinavian vampires, the draug, attack Gotham City, the Bat-family is in for it until Batman’s old friend Kris Kringle shows up (the stunned reactions as various characters grasp that Santa is real is one of the fun parts). Years ago, the Norse woodsman he once was gave joy to children with his gifts and helped banish monsters to the Phantom Zone. Finally his old friend Krampus seemed to go psycho and had to be banished too; now he’s back, freeing his fellow prisoners and all humanity is imperiled. Can the superheroes stop the monsters and teach Krampus the true meaning of Christmas.

This was a fun miniseries, that meshes Santa and superheroes well. It’s interesting to see how standard giving Santa roots in Norse mythology has become, and how popular Krampus has become in America (for his history, click here).

All rights to cover remain with current holder.
