My plan for yesterday and today was pretty clear. Sunday morning, TYG and I would go bicycling as usual. Afternoon, I’d probably watch more movies for the time-travel book. Monday I’d devote the entire day to cleaning, sorting paperwork and so forth.
Sunday morning, unfortunately, was just drizzly enough we didn’t want to bicycle around in it. So we waited for it to clear up. And waited. And waited. Eventually I cleaned the kitchen while we waited, but when I was done it was still drizzling. So no bicycling (yet, as you’ll see).
Then in the afternoon we decided to go see the new Dutch painting exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of Art. It focuses on miniatures and small painting (not all small paintings, it turns out, are miniatures) with work from Rembrandt, Vermeer and other artists I didn’t know. The work was quite breathtaking, from the light to the incredible detail in the small images to the flashes of personality that came through in some of the portraits. So definitely better than research.
Today, we decided to make up for lost time and go bicycling on the American Tobacco Trail. TYG had a social engagement so we were on the road by 7:45. First time we’ve been out that early in a while, and it was gorgeous, especially as the day brightened and the light began dappling the forest. And with the cool dry air, we held up much better than our last ride from our house to the Raleigh trailhead.
However, we did have a deadline. So knowing that I usually slow down on the way home, I compensated by pushing. And I did much better than usual—in fact I’m surprised how much of the ride I was really going (for me) fast. But by the time we made it home … urgh. Sore legs, general soreness, completely wiped.
So no cleaning and precious little else accomplished, sigh. Still worth it because it’s been a month since we went the whole distance and it was beautiful. But some productive work would have been good. Perhaps this weekend?
