A funny thing happened on the way to the doctor … (#SFWApro)

Well, technically it was on the way home. In fact I had two odd experiences on the way home Sunday and Monday.
Sunday, despite the possibility of early afternoon rain, we set out in the late morning to bike up the American Tobacco Trail. The sky didn’t look too bad but I was inclined to play it safe and turn back after an hour. TYG convinced me to push on until we reached last week’s stopping point—which convinced me we should go just a little further and make an even 11 miles out.
We made it. We turned back, and by now the sky was looking much more ominous. About three miles later it started to drip. A short distance after that, it was drizzling steadily. On top of that it was cold. Which was much more unpleasant, as I’d dressed for the relatively warm weather we started with: no gloves, shorts, flip-flops, no jacket. Now I was getting wet and chilled to the bone. We kept going which was pretty dumb on my part—much smarter to stop off somewhere when we reached the shopping zone and warm up before going on. Finally we did make it home. I warmed myself up with lukewarm water, then a full bath. But between maxing our mileage and bicycling in the cold and rain we were stiff on through Monday.
Monday’s homeward voyage was lighter in spirit. Last week my doctor’s lab people called and said when I came in for my annual checkup (all fine, thanks) I hadn’t provided a large enough urine sample. So Monday morning I went in and provided a new one.
On the way back home, I remembered that on the previous visit, we’d gotten on the wrong side of Roxboro Ave. for turning onto South 85 to get home, though we saw the problem soon enough to switch lanes. This time I carefully positioned myself in the right lane, or so I thought. As it turned out, I’d set myself on the side for turning to N. 85, and this time I didn’t think it was safe to switch lanes. So I did what I always think drivers should do (i.e., those crazy drivers who insist on putting everyone at risk just so they don’t miss their turn) and took 85 north, planning to take the first exit and get back on southwards.
I had forgotten that it’s a loooong way before the next exit. So by the time I made it back to Roxboro on S. 85, I’d probably added 10 to 15 minutes to my trip.
On the plus side, I’m unlikely to make that mistake again. 🙂
