And comic-book TPBs to boot!

SCARLET TRACES is a good graphic novel set after H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds as Britain uses the Martian technology to launch a second industrial revolution. When adventurer Captain Autumn investigates a missing girl, however, he discovers the revolution has an ugly side … Well done steampunk, though very downbeat (I’m curious if the follow-up, Great Game, changes that).
CAPTAIN AMERICA: Man Out of Time retells the story of Captain America thawing out of suspended animation to discover a world of civil rights, women’s rights and ponder what, if anything, his role should be. More idealistic and less cynical than Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (which also updated the original sixties story) but a good read (as to the realism of Cap being so enlightened, I touch on that here).
PROJECT SUPERPOWERS CHAPTER TWO, Volume One continues Alex Ross and Jim Krueger’s story of what happens when Golden Age heroes (from a now defunct company and therefore out of copyright) are freed after decades of mystic imprisonment and set out to free the world from the grip of the covert Supremacy cabal——which, since the cabal owns people such as the president, makes it look as if the heroes are turning on their own nation. Having scored a major victory in the first book, they now face their own kid sidekicks, cloned warriors and other threats as the Supremacy tries to discredit them——plus one of their number turns out to be a very pissed off Zeus. Very entertaining.
BATMAN CHRONICLES VOL 8 has the Dynamic Duo squaring off against Nazi spies, Joker, Catwoman (in one of her weaker stories, mostly for ignoring Batman’s own interest on her), Penguin (easily more fun than the Joker in this period——and far more cunning), the Scarecrow (a dull story, and his last until the 1960s) and the debut of the rotund rogues Tweedledum and Tweedledee. A fun collection, as usual; interesting how many stories involve the villains robbing fund drives relating to the war effort (I’m not sure if this was just to be topical or because it’s the worst crime anyone could think of short of actual treason).
